The collective was invited to be a part of the One Way Street Party – a one day pop-up event as part of the 2012 Surfers Paradise Festival. The challenge was to create a piece that we could install quickly on the day, and also create our allocated section separately (as some of us live interstate) in the weeks leading up to the event.
We were allocated a long thin space, so the idea we went with was to create the words “we heart one way” in 1.2m high letters – with each member creating a letter in their own individual style with all keeping to the same font and colour scheme. We wanted something that would not only encapsulate ‘us’ as a collective, giving each of us an opportunity to showcase our individual talents whilst still being able to contribute to a unified concept.
Collective exhibition history shows that we usually all choose to make small pieces (A3 or below), so this exhibit was quite a challenge – especially considering some collective members are barely taller than their letters! Thank you to the Surfers Paradise Festival for inviting us to participate. We loved the challenge and had a great time on the day.
